We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer for Undulators to join our team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, analysis, fabrication, integration, and support of precision mechanical systems for undulator assemblies used in advanced light source and free-electron laser (FEL) facilities.
About the Company
xLight is on a mission to build the next-generation light source to power the future of semiconductor manufacturing. Our approach harnesses the power of free-electron lasers, utilizing accelerator-based methods in use globally at scientific user facilities. Extending this technology, we are developing an industrial-grade light source, engineered for continuous operation, to meet the sophisticated demands of next-gen patterning, metrology, and inspection applications.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical systems for planar and helical undulators, including magnet support structures, vacuum chambers, and motion control systems.
- Perform detailed structural, thermal, and vibrational analyses (FEA) to ensure mechanical stability and precision alignment.
- Support magnetic measurements, tuning, and alignment of undulator arrays in collaboration with physicists and magnetic engineers.
- Work closely with fabrication vendors to ensure components meet technical specifications and high-precision tolerances.
- Lead integration, assembly, and installation efforts, ensuring proper alignment and environmental compatibility.
- Develop technical documentation, CAD models, BOMs, and assembly procedures.
- Support operations and maintenance activities, including troubleshooting and upgrades of existing undulator systems.
- Conduct comprehensive engineering analyses using simulations, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to enhance the performance, stability, and compliance of mechanical and optomechanical systems, concerning alignment, vibration, and thermal control.
- Develop and perform test procedures to verify component performance against design specifications.
- Conduct on-site commissioning and troubleshooting of accelerator beamline, optics, and mechanical systems.
- Ensure that all designs and activities comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines including safety analyses and risk assessments.
- Work with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to manage design documentation, drawings, bill of materials (BOMs), and engineering change requests/orders (ECRs/ECOs).
- Maintain detailed engineering records, including design notes, calculations, and meeting outcomes.
- Prepare and present reports summarizing design choices, analysis results, and testing outcomes.
Qualifications
Staff Engineer (P4)
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with 8+ years of relevant experience
- Graduate degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with 6+ years of relevant experience
- Ability to act as a technical lead for design challenges that require cross-functional collaboration between different stakeholder groups (mechanical, optics, electrical, systems, physics, etc.)
- Ability to help develop and implement in-house engineering procedures and best practices to ensure quality, efficiency, and consistency across all mechanical and optomechanical systems
Senior Staff Engineer (P5)
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with 15+ years of relevant experience
- Graduate degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with 13+ years of relevant experience
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with electron accelerator component design or related scientific instrumentation.
- Familiarity with semiconductor capital equipment.
