Job Description

xLight is seeking a highly motivated Control Systems Director to architect and lead the design of all control systems needed for our new free-electron laser light source for industry. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a dynamic, start-up environment and will thrive working in a small group setting in close collaboration with the scientific and engineering team. Critical aspects of the work will focus on the design, procurement and installation of the entire control system and related components and hardware.

This is a full-time appointment based in Palo Alto, California with remote and hybrid options supported.

Responsibilities

• Determine the requirements for the entire control system.
• Design and implement a secure architecture that meets industry standards and incorporates leading practices and innovations.
• Incorporate in the design the ability to implement machine learning algorithms and digital twin for system-wide automation.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
• 10+ years of experience with control systems for particle accelerators, experimental systems or other large-scale machines, using EPICS, TANGO or similar control architecture.
• Strong understanding of real time operating systems, high speed digital acquisition, signal processing systems and industrial controls
• Extensive experience with the complete product lifecycle
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing technical teams including staff and contractors to deliver as planned.
• Expert knowledge of modern, large, distributed, integrated control systems solutions including commercial, collaborative and custom hardware, firmware and software as used in scientific user facilities or industrial applications.

Desired Skills

• Experience with developing system requirements, timelines and cost estimates, and working with vendors to deliver on those requirements
• Ability to program PLCs and FPGAs is a plus
• Experience in the semiconductor industry supply chain and related technologies
