About xLight

xLight is on a mission to build the next-generation light source to power the future of semiconductor manufacturing. Our approach harnesses the power of free-electron lasers, utilizing accelerator-based methods in use globally at scientific user facilities. Extending this technology, we are developing an industrial-grade light source, engineered for continuous operation, to meet the sophisticated demands of next-gen patterning, metrology, and inspection applications.

Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Cryogenic Engineering Leader to build and manage a talented engineering team responsible for designing, constructing, and operating a complex 2K cryogenic system supporting our superconducting electron accelerator. As the technical leader of this effort, you will play a critical role in guiding the team through all project phases, from design through commissioning, while mentoring engineers at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development: Build, hire, and lead a high-performing cryogenic engineering team. Mentor engineers and technicians, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • System Design & Development: Lead the design and development of the 2 Kelvin cryogenic plant, including specifications, component selection, system integration, and technical validation. Ensure all designs meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
  • Project Management: Manage all aspects of the project including scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, risk management, and stakeholder communication. Ensure timely and successful completion while maintaining technical quality.
  • Installation & Commissioning: Lead on-site activities during the Albany convergence phases. Oversee installation, commissioning, and operational setup of the cryogenic system with your team, including performance verification, troubleshooting, and final validation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other teams and departments, as well as external partners and vendors, to ensure alignment and coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation of design specifications, test procedures, operational guidelines, and lessons learned. Provide regular technical and progress reports to stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in cryogenic engineering with a strong background in the design, construction, and operation of cryogenic systems
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams and complex engineering projects from conception through completion
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate effectively across teams and organizational levels
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Siemens NX preferred) and other engineering tools for design and analysis
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations related to cryogenic systems and safety protocols
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize complex tasks, and manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with superconducting technology and particle accelerator systems
  • Familiarity with electron accelerator component design or related scientific instrumentation
  • Experience designing, building, or commissioning capital equipment in semiconductor or related manufacturing environments
  • Track record of successfully transitioning team members from project-based roles to ongoing operational responsibilities
